Police have arrested 10 people in connection with the massacre of 35 mourners at an African National Congress funeral vigil, the government said Sunday.

Law and Order Minister Adriaan Vlok also imposed a curfew on the Sebokeng black township, where gunmen firing automatic weapons and hurling grenades killed the ANC followers and wounded more than 40 people in the predawn attack Saturday.

Police said two women were burned to death and five houses were set on fire in Sebokeng in apparent revenge for the attack.

However, the ANC dismissed the police report that 10 people had been arrested, calling the arrests a token attempt to calm local outrage. It said the slaughter was the work of common criminals and accused police of failing to protect blacks.

The ANC also said it had no evidence that its black political rivals, the Zulu-based Inkatha Freedom Party, were directly involved in the killings.
