Teen-Ager on Bicycle Fires Shots Near School

Share

A teen-ager on a bicycle fired five or six shots from a handgun as he rode past a La Puente elementary school Monday, but no one was hit and authorities do not believe he was aiming at the campus.

The shooting occurred shortly after 8 a.m., as the 590 students at Nelson Elementary School were taking their daily walk around the perimeter of the school grounds, said Principal Maureen White. The youth, described as being 14 to 16 years old, rode by on a beach-style bicycle and fired the weapon, apparently toward several houses on the other side of the street, according to sheriff’s deputies.

The students were quickly returned to their classrooms, where they remained locked in until about 10 a.m., White said. No arrests have been made.
