7 Inmates Hurt in Racial Fight at County Jail Camp
Seven inmates were injured, one critically, during a racially motivated fight among black and Latino prisoners Monday at a Castaic county jail camp, authorities said.
A group of 25 to 30 Latino and eight black inmates used fists, feet and a variety of weapons during a brawl in an exercise yard at the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho, Deputy Mary Landreth said. Seven blacks were injured. Five, including one with serious puncture wounds, were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, Landreth said.
Deputies broke up the fight in about 15 minutes. Investigators said it was apparently the result of racial tensions between the two groups of inmates, who live in the same dormitory. The remaining inmates were divided and moved to separate dorms after the fight, deputies said.
