The nation’s first human trials of an AIDS vaccine have found it to be safe, a study to be published today in the Annals of Internal Medicine says.

The three-year study established that the vaccine, called recombinant gp160, was tested safely on 72 healthy patients at various U.S. research centers. The vaccine also produced high rates of antibody response in subjects after several doses.

“Our findings suggest that additional studies that examine the effects of using higher doses of rgp160 are warranted,” said the study conducted by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
