Exercising the Law: While presidential scion Jeb Bush was out jogging last week, Miami immigration officials went to his home and deported his maid, Maria Magdalena Romero, to her native Honduras. The Immigration and Naturalization Service used to send a deportation letter ahead of their agents, but a new law lets the INS apprehend someone without warning if deportation appeals fail. The agents took Romero to the Honduran consulate, obtained her traveling papers and put her on a one-way flight home. Richard Smith, director of the INS office in Miami, acknowledged that “After three years, she kind of came to be part of the family.” Romero’s immigration status allowed her to work during her hearings and appeals. The stricter rule was signed by Jeb Bush’s father, George Bush.

* Where Am I?: The National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C., has been besieged with calls and letters from doctors, nurses and reservists being sent to the Persian Gulf, and from relatives of military personnel, all looking for maps of the volatile area. So the society rushed 50,000 plastic-coated maps to the Mideast and to families in the U.S. The magazine’s chief cartographer, John B. Carver, said the maps include the number of troops, tanks and combat aircraft nations in the region.

* John Hancock: In writing “Breaking Barriers,” syndicated Washington columnist Carl Rowan may have avoided writer’s block, but now he may have a case of writer’s cramp. He recently signed 3,800 copies of his memoirs in 11 hours and 38 minutes over two days at K mart’s world headquarters in Troy, Mich., and K mart will distribute the copies to civic and political leaders. The book outlines Rowan’s rise from poverty, his relations with civil rights leaders and Presidents and tackles issues in American education, health and human services and race.

* Un-Covered: It may be the first time Time magazine has used a Penthouse Pet on its cover. Last week’s issue on breast cancer featured a thermal picture of Angela Nicholas’s right breast. The former Penthouse Pet of the Year said she posed for some seven hours and didn’t know her breast had been chosen for the Time cover until the magazine came out last week.
