Drug Scandal Continuing, Dingell Says: Recalls and suspended shipments by two companies indicate “the generic drug scandal is not abating,” the head of a congressional subcommittee said. Rep. John Dingell, (D-Mich.), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee, said the continuing problems are worrisome and raise questions about whether some of the companies can produce safe and effective drugs. Pharmaceutical Basics Inc. of Denver said it was suspending shipments of all its products after discovering that employees had falsely reported to the Food and Drug Administration the amount of testing done on some drugs. Dingell said his subcommittee was told that another generic drug manufacturer, Duramed of Cincinnati, was recalling all strengths and lots of five drugs and was withdrawing two of its FDA-approved applications because of “deviations from approved manufacturing procedures. These disturbing disclosures regarding yet more generic drug manufacturers show that the generic drug scandal is not abating,” Dingell said.
