From Times Wire Services

Journalists at the Australian arm of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire today began a series of strikes to protest the firing of 14 colleagues at the company’s flagship newspaper.

About 250 journalists walked off the job for one day at three newspapers in the News Ltd. chain, the Adelaide Advertiser, Hobart Mercury and Northern Territory News in Darwin.

Officials of the Australian Journalists Assn. said similar actions could be taken against other newspapers in the chain in protest against the sacking of 14 journalists at the Sydney-based daily, The Australian.

News Ltd., wholly owned by News Corp., has said the firings were a result of the poor economic climate. A spokesman for News Ltd. said the decision was final.

“We told them (the union) our decision stood,” he said.
