CYPRESS : Clubhouse Plans for Golf Course OKd

Plans for a new clubhouse at the Cypress Golf Club were given the go-ahead this week by the City Council, despite the concerns city staff members had about the building’s design.

Nikken America Inc. of Los Angeles will develop the two-story clubhouse, which includes space for banquet facilities. The council also approved the sale of alcohol at the site.

City staff members were concerned that the clubhouse’s contemporary design would not be compatible with a hotel that is planned for the area.

“It could stand out more than we wanted it to,” Director of Planning Chris Eynon warned the council. However, instead of delaying the project, the council decided to approve it and have Nikken bring back more detailed architectural plans at a later time.

“I think it is a wonderful project,” said Councilman Richard Partin. “I think it is adequate and well thought out. I see nothing wrong with it.”

Plans call for the clubhouse to be built a 3.9-acre parcel off Sibony Street, the main entrance for the golf course and proposed business park. It will include a large veranda, pro shop and restaurant.

The banquet facilities will accommodate about 150 people, substantially fewer than council members had hoped. “I am disappointed with the banquet space,” Councilwoman Joyce C. Nicholson told the developers. “We do need a place here in the city (for banquets). We are tired of going to Buena Park.”

The clubhouse was included when the original golf course proposal was approved last April. FJC U.S.A., an affiliate of Fuji Country Co. of Japan, bought the golf course from Lloyd Arnold, owner of the adjacent Los Alamitos Race Course. The course is expected to open in early 1992.
