18,000 Christmas Trees Collected for Recycling
The city of Los Angeles collected more than 18,000 Christmas trees for recycling during the week of Dec. 29, 1990, and Jan. 5, 1991--a 360% increase from the 1989 figure of 5,000 trees. About 180 tons of landfill space was saved through the program.
Residents brought about 14,000 trees to seven drop-off sites throughout the city. In return, residents were given a free bag of compost.
Two pilot curbside collection programs yielded more than 4,000 trees for recycling from areas of North Central and South-Central Los Angeles. All the trees collected will be turned into compost.
