Would-Be Challenger to Ferraro Disqualified

A Los Feliz-area investor has been disqualified from running against Los Angeles City Council President John Ferraro because he missed a deadline for reporting his economic assets, city officials said Friday.

Barney Feldman, 72, was told this week he cannot run in the April 9 primary election against Ferraro. The councilman is seeking reelection in District 4, which includes portions of North Hollywood and Studio City.

Feldman, a real estate investor, said he plans to file a lawsuit challenging the city’s ruling.

Joe Giles, assistant chief of the city’s elections division, said Feldman was disqualified because he missed the deadline for filing an economic interest statement detailing possible investments, loans, business partnerships and other assets. The deadline for filing that statement was Monday.

Feldman, who ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 1977, said he was unaware of the filing deadline, which took effect this year as part of a city ethics package approved by voters last June. Before this year, candidates did not face disqualification for missing the deadline.
