Don’t Look Too American, Army Tells Base Residents

Cowboy boots, baseball caps, loud music--all these identifying factors and more can expose U.S. soldiers in Germany to terrorist attacks, the U.S. Army warned Friday.

“Don’t attract attention--try to dress and act like local residents,” said the Armed Forces Network television, announcing the military’s latest warnings against possible anti-American attacks because of the Persian Gulf War.

“Don’t play loud music or wear typically American clothing such as cowboy boots or baseball caps,” the Army advised troops and family members here after almost one-third of the 260,000 troops in Germany left for Saudi Arabia.

AFN also warned Americans on Thursday evening not to wear yellow ribbons as a sign of support for loved ones in the Persian Gulf.

The Army has not received any threats against U.S. bases here but most have closed down their schools and imposed strict security at base entrances.
