Some Reactions to Articles on Local Shopping Malls

Share

I was extremely disappointed in the inaccurate and unfair article on Dec. 27, 1990, in the San Gabriel Valley section regarding shopping centers.

Not only were your facts on sales volumes at The Plaza at West Covina about $75 per square foot lower than what I had previously quoted you, your article was a tremendous slight on the community in general.

Your disregard for journalistic professionalism and total lack of effort in your reporting can best be summed up in the individual you choose to photograph and quote while at The Plaza! A 16-year-old boy who had nothing better to do than spit over the railing . . . Of the thousands and thousands of respectable people that shop at The Plaza at West Covina, was his the most representative quote you could obtain for your article?

Editor’s note: To obtain sales per square foot figures for each mall, The Times divided the 1989 taxable retail sales volume (from State Board of Equalization data) by the mall’s total square footage. For The Plaza, these numbers were $128,206,000; 1,032,000 square feet; $124 per square foot. Individual malls may not use the same formula when calculating their sales data.
