Meisler’s scathing indictment of America’s ignorance of international affairs and other cultures didn’t go far enough. The nationwide stupidity he describes is combined with the attitude that “we are better than everybody else,” which is frightening and dangerous.

As the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe experience the birth pangs of their newly gained freedom, it is tragic that the original cradle of democracy and hope continues to deteriorate into a bitter never-never land that is suspicious of those who look different and who do not think exactly as we do.
