Miles Copeland; Expert on Espionage, Mideast

Miles Copeland, 74, spy, Middle East expert and author of books about U.S. intelligence operations. The Birmingham, Ala., native worked for the Office of Strategic Services military intelligence group in World War II, served as vice consul in Syria and later worked for the Central Intelligence Agency. His books included “The Game of Nations,” “Without Cloak or Dagger” and “The Game Player.” He became a close friend of Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser. In his 20s, the versatile Copeland worked as an arranger and trumpeter for the Glenn Miller Orchestra. On Jan. 14 in Birmingham of undisclosed causes.
