World IN BRIEF : CHINA : Would-Be Observers of Trials Ousted

A group of foreign human-rights advocates who sought to attend the trials of leaders of pro-democracy demonstrations crushed by the government in June, 1989, were expelled from China. The seven visitors, one of whom came from Los Angeles, were questioned by authorities and ordered to leave the country, reflecting official sensitivity over the trials. At least 24 protest participants have been tried or sentenced this month.
