Miguel Heredia, 12, was having trouble changing temperatures from Fahrenheit to Celsius in his math lesson.

Navy Lt. Pat Moorhouse, one of 15 tutors from Point Mugu, sat down beside him at Somis School on Wednesday, and they worked on it together.

“He helped me figure it out,” Miguel said.

The 11 men and four women from the Pacific Missile Test Center will tutor sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students, Principal Dale Forgey said.

“Society’s falling behind in education, and we have an obligation to help out,” said Lt. Mike McCloskey, program organizer.

Officials from Point Mugu contacted the Camarillo Area Chamber of Commerce last year about starting a pilot tutoring program in Ventura County. The chamber recommended Somis School, which has 300 students from kindergarten to eighth grade.

Students generally need help with math, science and English, but the tutors will take on any subject, Forgey said.

After the six-week tutoring session, the students will be given a tour of the missile test site, Forgey said.

Organizers also hope to put together a session for gifted students, who will work with civilian engineers, he said.
