Because of the threat of terrorism, the State Department advised Americans to postpone NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL to the Middle East and to check with the department for travel advisories before visiting other parts of the world. Department spokeswoman Margaret Tutwiler said the government has no credible evidence of any specific terrorist activity but advised its own employees to defer most foreign travel. It issued the warning to the public “to avoid any appearance of a double standard,” she said.
