The Senate today voted 99 to 0 for a bill providing tax relief for U.S. troops serving in the Persian Gulf. The measure, already approved by the House, now goes to President Bush for his signature.

The bill, which would cost about $10 million for each year the war continues, would:

Delay the tax-filing deadline for people in the region (and their spouses) until six months after they leave the area. There would be no penalty or interest because of the delay.

Freeze Internal Revenue Service collection and enforcement measures for the same periods.

Allow a veteran wounded in the region to delay filing as long as he or she is hospitalized anywhere in the world for treatment of wounds, but no longer than five years after the veteran returns to the United States.

Require the IRS to pay interest starting April 15 on any refund due combat soldiers.
