Atomic power plants in Illinois, Maryland and Upstate New York have been marked for closer scrutiny by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission because of unfavorable safety reviews.

Two of the plants previously had been on the NRC’s “close watch” list, a semi-annual safety analysis of the nation’s 122 nuclear power reactors required under a 1986 law.

The agency said it added Commonwealth Edison Co.’s Zion nuclear plant 60 miles north of Chicago to the list because of “significant weaknesses” found in the latest review.

The two other plants--Baltimore Gas and Electric Co.’s Calvert Cliffs reactors in Maryland and Niagara Mohawk Power Corp.’s Nine Mile Point plant in New York have been under close watch since 1988.
