Manslaughter Charges Filed in Fatal Crash

A Compton man accused of a drunken head-on collision that killed one person and injured nine others has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, prosecutors said Thursday. Raymond Basped, 60, also has been charged with one count each of diving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a blood-alcohol content greater than the legal limit of .08. Each charge alleges that injuries resulted from Basped’s drunken driving.

All three charges carry an additional allegation that there were multiple victims in the crash. If convicted of all the counts and allegations, Basped could be sentenced to 13 years in prison, said Deputy Dist. Atty. William Smith.

Basped was at the wheel of a car that crashed head-on Monday night into a van containing 10 people. The accident occurred in the 1600 block of North Alameda Street. Ramona Perez, 20, died in the collision that injured nine other people, several critically.
