CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Merchants Hurt by Freeze to Get Help

State officials took the first step in releasing $4 million in state funds to businesses affected by the December freeze that devastated California crops. The transfer was approved by the state Office of Small Business, but must clear several hurdles before being disbursed. A spokeswoman said the grants will go to businesses ranging from packing houses to clothing shops or grocery stores that suffered a drop in sales.
