COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS : Anti-Drug Musical to Be Staged

The theater department from Cerritos College will stage “It’s My Life,” a musical about drug prevention, Friday at College of the Canyons.

The student government paid $400 for the hourlong show, but students will see it free. High schools and junior high schools in the Santa Clarita Valley also were invited to attend the performance.

David Fucile, Associated Students trustee, said he saw the musical at a conference in November. “I knew when I left that it was something the student government should put its money into,” he said.

The performance launches the Cerritos College group’s tour of the production, said Maureen May, assistant project director. The musical will be performed at other colleges and at conferences through May, she said.

May said that the musical is the “first college student-to-student drug prevention program.”

The musical, part of the Cerritos school’s Bright Futures project is about a teen-age girl who gets involved in drugs and alcohol. The story relates how the girl’s decisions affects those around her.

“It has a reality to it that people are touched by whether it’s been in their family or in the community,” said Patricia Cook, project director.

Students make up the cast of the musical, first performed last fall. The money charged for the group’s appearances covers travel expenses, Cook said.

Other production costs come from the federal Funds for Improvement of Post-Secondary Education program.
