CAMARILLO : Father Gets Call on Phone Found in Saudi Desert

Share

A Ventura County Marine stationed in Saudi Arabia had a lucky chance to reach out and touch someone when he discovered a telephone in the desert while he was on patrol, his father said Friday.

“He called to tell us he loves us,” David Shuster of Camarillo said of his son, 1st. Lt. Scott Shuster, 24.

It seems Scott Shuster was out in the desert Thursday when he came across a phone connected to a telephone satellite that was probably left behind by a military communications center, his father said.

“It was literally just sitting out in the middle of the desert like a camel,” David Shuster said.

Although the parents and their son didn’t share any inside information, “he sounded very confident,” David Shuster said. “His tone was one of mature optimism. He told me that Saddam doesn’t know what he’s playing with.”

Nevertheless, David Shuster said he and his wife, Suzanne, are terrified. “Our son is out there in the front line. He’s right in the thick of it.”

The young Marine also called his wife, Corinne, and 16-month-old daughter, Erin, at Camp Pendleton.

The phone calls were charged to David Shuster’s telephone credit card, the father said.
