From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Rescuers said there was no hope for any of 17 Japanese and Chinese climbers missing for 22 days on a snowed-in mountain in southwest China. The search was called off and the climbers were presumed dead. The team of 11 Japanese and six Chinese lost contact with their base camp Jan. 3 as they tried to conquer 22,110-foot Mt. Meili. Officials said the group may have been buried by “huge avalanches caused by heavy snowfall.”
