Petra Kronberger lost her first race in the World Alpine Skiing Championships at Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria, but still put herself in a commanding position to win the combined event.

Kronberger finished second behind Austrian teammate Sabine Ginther in the downhill portion. The combined slalom is still to be contested. Sweden’s Lars Boerje Eriksson suffered a broken leg, and Norway’s Lasse Kjus cut his lip and lost two teeth in spills during men’s downhill practice for the World Championships, creating new concerns about course safety.
