IRVINE : Heavy Water Users May Face Surcharge

In stepped-up action against the region’s drought, the Irvine Ranch Water District will consider a plan today that would double water costs for excessive water users.

The proposal, which will go before a public hearing at the water district’s board meeting, would double the cost of water on amounts used in excess of 26,180 gallons a month.

Because the average residential customer uses about 9,000 gallons a month, only excessive users will be affected, district spokeswoman Joyce Wegner-Gwidt said.

“We’re going after the really high water users,” she said.

If the board votes to implement the surcharge, it will have a trial run in February.

Customers using more than 26,180 gallons would see the surcharge as a note on their bills, but the amount would not be added to the total.

That would put them on notice and, it is hoped, encourage them to call the water district for tips on conserving, she said.

The extra charges would begin in March. Customers with special water needs, such as people who use water for physical therapy, may apply for exemptions, Wegner-Gwidt said.

If the drought continues, the water district will probably look at lowering the 26,180 ceiling, she said.

The district will also be looking at adopting a tiered billing system so that the more water used, the more each gallon will cost. The district now charges a flat 53 cents for each 748 gallons used.

The board’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the district’s administrative office, at 18802 Bardeen Ave. in Irvine.
