British aerospace and engineering group Rolls-Royce said today it will cut between 1,200 and 1,500 jobs in its commercial aerospace engine division because of a worldwide recession.

The group told the work force at its plant in Derby that about 10% of the 15,000 jobs there will be axed, blaming the cuts on recession, pressures on costs and the effect of the Persian Gulf War on commercial airline operations.

The job losses follow cuts in Rolls-Royce’s military engine operations last summer, in which 800 jobs out of a work force of 8,000 were lost. The group has also announced plans to reduce the work force at its military aircraft division by 5,000.
