The Chargers announced Tuesday they have released Jack Teele, the team’s assistant to President Alex Spanos.

“Jack has been a dedicated and loyal member of the Chargers organization, but we’ve decided to go in another direction,” said Spanos in the club’s release. “I’m thankful for his support and help over the years and I wish him well.”

Teele, 60, who spearheaded the expansion of San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium and the addition of 29 skyboxes, joined the Chargers in 1981 after working for 21 seasons with the Rams.

“I was a little bit surprised,” Teele said, “but not totally.

“I’ve been in the business long enough to understand what happens. I hope to get a job with another NFL team and that’s what I will be doing in the next few weeks.”

Teele, who has overseen the business, marketing, public relations and ticket offices for the Chargers, was also part of the task force to bring Super Bowl XXII to San Diego in 1988.

“I’ve enjoyed my 10 years with the Chargers and leave behind a lot of good friends,” he said. “I’m very proud of some of the things I’ve been able to accomplish here, and I’ve enjoyed the San Diego community.”

San Diego State has received three more oral commitments, and a county kicker picked Air Force, as the high school recruiting season enters its final week.

SDSU has received commitments from:

--Duke Uperesa, a 6-foot-5, 255-pound offensive lineman from El Capitan High.

Dave Waasted, El Capitan coach, said Brigham Young and Arizona also expressed interest in Uperesa, although SDSU was the only school he visitied.

“He’s a big hitter,” Waasted said. “He’s a big kid, a smart kid. And he’s quick.”

--Doug Tom, a 6-4, 220-pound linebacker from Kamehameha Schools in Hawaii. Tom, who was also heavily recruited by Hawaii and Utah, might be moved to the defensive line.

--Marlon Manassa, a 5-10, 180-pound running back from Point Loma High. Manassa rushed for 1,300 yards and scored 18 touchdowns this fall.

Air Force, meanwhile, received an oral commitment from J.J. Wadas, a kicker from Crawford. Wadas took official visits to Washington State and Cal before choosing Air Force. He has been picked all-City Central League for each of the past three years. He also ranks second in the county in soccer assists, and might play both football and soccer at Air Force.

The first day high school seniors can sign a national letter-of-intent is next Wednesday.
