West Covina : Murders More Than Double
Murders in the city more than doubled in 1990, going from five in 1989 to 11 last year, a police study has found.
Police Chief Ronald E. Holmes attributed the surge in part to an increase in gang activity and said some of the other homicides were family disputes.
Overall, major crime in West Covina increased 5.5%, a smaller jump than reported in the previous two years, when crime increased 10.9% each year, according to the report presented to the City Council on Monday.
From January to December, 1990, there was a total of 7,122 incidents of rape, burglary, homicide, robbery, aggravated assault, theft and auto theft, police said. In 1989, there were 6,749 major crimes.
