Paul Ratushniak; Retired Barber

Paul Ratushniak, a Van Nuys barber shop owner for 25 years, has died at a Van Nuys hospital. He was 71.

A longtime resident of Van Nuys, Ratushniak died Sunday of cancer, said his son, Gary Ratushniak.

Born in Saskatchewan, Canada, Ratushniak worked as a barber in Canada before coming to the United States in 1957. He started cutting hair at a barber shop on Van Nuys Boulevard in 1959. Two years later he purchased the business and changed the name to Paul’s Barber Shop. In 1986, he sold the shop, but continued to work part time for a few years.

Ratushniak was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Sherman Oaks. He had also been president of the Holy Name Society of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church for several years.

He is survived by his son, Gary Ratushniak of Van Nuys; brother Tony Ratushniak of Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada; sister Mary Gynp of Stony Creek, Ontario, Canada; and two grandchildren.

A vigil is planned for 7:30 p.m. tonight at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, 5154 De Longpre Ave., Los Angeles.

A funeral is scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with burial to follow at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills.
