Israel and Palestinians
I want to comment on only one of the issues addressed by Nusseibeh.
Nusseibeh, along with many others, uses U.N. Resolution 242 as a focal point to attack Israel, the U.N. and the U.S. for Israel’s not withdrawing from the occupied lands. I am concerned that Americans and others are not aware of all of the conditions of that resolution.
Yes, the resolution calls for the withdrawal of Israel but it also calls for:
1) Cessation of all hostilities and that peace be declared.
2) The state of Israel be recognized.
3) Israel’s borders be guaranteed.
Where are the Arab and Palestinian calls for peace, recognition and borders? I am tired of hearing cries about withdrawal, while ignoring the other aspects of the resolution. There are Arab countries that are still at war with Israel. There are Arab countries that deny Israeli existence and do not recognize borders. How can Israel withdraw under these circumstances?
