Developments in the Gulf War included: A--Saudi troops backed by U.S. Marines regained the coastal town of Khafji, where the Gulf War’s first sustained ground fighting occurred. A total of 11 Marines were killed; earlier, the figure given was 12. More than 160 Iraqi soldiers were captured.
B--A U.S. plane was reported missing over the war zone. Sources said it could be an AC-130, an Air Force plane that can be used for battlefield command and control and jamming enemy communications.
C--There were reports that five or six Iraqi divisions--at least 60,000 troops--were massing near the Kuwaiti town of Wafra, perhaps preparing for an attack.
D--Ninety-eight Iraqi aircraft have flown to Iran, which has said the planes will be impounded until the war ends, according to the Pentagon. But a British TV report said planes are flying freely between the two countries despite Iran’s assurance to the contrary.
E--A shortage of booms and skimmers in Saudi Arabia was reportedly slowing cleanup efforts on a major oil spill in the Gulf. Meanwhile, a separate spill in the northern Gulf--probably from an Iraqi oil terminal--has been detected.
