The army today suggested it is prepared to send troops to detain Croatia’s defense minister, which would escalate the crisis between the federal military and the independence-minded Yugoslav republic.

“The competent organs for criminal prosecution of the Yugoslav armed forces are undertaking steps” to bring Croatian Defense Minister Martin Spegelj into custody, said a statement issued by a military investigative judge in Zagreb.

Spegelj has been accused of plotting an armed uprising against the federal authorities. The army statement, carried by the state Tanjug news agency, did not offer details.
