Call-In Poll Critical of Gulf Coverage

NEW YORK — More than 80% of TV viewers who called in for an informal ABC telephone poll didn’t think journalists were doing a fair and responsible job of covering the war in the Persian Gulf, the network said Friday.
The question was posed Friday on “Good Morning America,” and 62,180 callers responded by dialing a special ABC number.
Eighty-three percent said they did not believe the news media were doing a responsible and fair job of covering the war, said Cathy Rehl, a spokeswoman for the show. Another 17% said the media were doing a good job.
Because the survey was an “informal poll, basically like a straw poll,” no sampling error estimate was made, Rehl said.
The special phone line operated from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST and each caller was charged 50 cents, she said.
