Don’t Give Colgate the Old Brush-Off

Jim Murray’s Jan. 24 article on New York Giant Coach Bill Parcells takes a cheap shot at Colgate University. Remarking on Parcells’ brief enrollment at the school, Murray writes “if Bill Parcells had liked to lose, he would have stayed at Colgate.”

Perhaps Murray is unaware that such NFL notables as Marv Hubbard and Mark van Eeghen of the (then) Super Bowl champion Oakland Raiders starred at the Hamilton (N.Y.) school. Colgate has also graduated safety Eugene Robinson of the Seattle Seahawks, as well as the 1990 NCAA runners-up in ice hockey. This is not bad for a school of 2,600 with no athletic scholarships, that takes, in Murray’s words, “a cavalier attitude toward winning and losing.”
