INDONESIA: Tourism in Indonesia is expected to reach an all-time high in 1991. The government last week launched “Visit Indonesia Year,” a campaign designed to boost the Indonesian economy by generating more tourism. The government is promoting Indonesian island attractions and has been encouraging investment in hotels and tour agencies. Tourism rose 34% to a record 2.1 million visitors last year as Indonesia gained from a drop in vacation travel to China, the Philippines and Sri Lanka, countries that have recently experienced political turmoil.
