TAIWAN: The Taipei government is beginning to address the huge environmental costs of Taiwan’s economic miracle. Prompted by public concern about the environment, the Taiwanese government is beginning to place some limits on development and taking steps to better enforce its existing environmental laws. For example, the government recently raised the maximum fine for a factory’s air pollution violation to $37,000 a day from $2,200. Officials at Taiwan’s Environmental Protection Administration say they will seek government authority for new regulations and stronger enforcement measures.
