Controversial ‘Doonesbury’

Share

Apparently the Florida newspaper censoring the Jan. 27 “Doonesbury” cartoons drawn by an airman from the war front has been persuaded that all news about the war should be cleared by the U.S. military, Israel, Saudi Arabia and/or Iraq (Part A, Jan. 27).

One wonders if the Naples (Fla.) Daily News readership had been protected during World War II from the likes of Bill Mauldin’s “Willie and Joe” series emanating from the foxholes. No doubt Mark Twain’s words will never see the light of day in that newspaper: “The emperor sent his troops to the field with immense enthusiasm; he will lead them in person--when they return.”
