Jury selection began Monday in the second murder trial of Roger Sing Ip, who is accused of killing a 15-year-old boy in 1989 after a near traffic collision.

Ip, 34, of Spring Valley, was acquitted of first-degree murder in his first trial, but will be tried on second-degree murder in the July 10, 1989, shooting of Kurt Von Yokes, a Mission Bay High School freshman. Potential jurors were questioned before San Diego Superior Court Judge Herbert Exarhos, who heard the first trial.

Last summer at his first trial, Ip testified that a carload of teen-agers almost collided with his car after he left a Pacific Beach restaurant where he once was part owner. Ip said several passengers yelled remarks to him about his driving, and he followed them to where Yokes was to be dropped off at his house.

He said the shooting of Yokes was accidental, and he only carried a gun with him because he was carrying money to be deposited. Ip said he had intended to talk to the teen-agers about the disrespect they showed him on the road.
