These “flying gas stations” of the U.S. Marines Corps have been participating in allied bombing sorties since the start of the war, refueling the warplanes that are hitting targets in occupied Kuwait and Iraq. The Vietnam-vintage, propeller-driven aircraft is also considered one of the most reliable transports for troops and equipment. There are about a dozen KC-130’s in the Middle East; six from the El Toro air station. Tanker planes are able to transfer up to 11,000 gallons of fuel.
