COUNTYWIDE : 50 Cargo Handlers to Be Sent to Gulf
- Share via
Fifty cargo handlers from Channel Islands Air National Guard Base have been placed on active duty and will depart for the Persian Gulf, possibly on Saturday, base officials said Wednesday.
In addition, 40 flight-crew members and aircraft mechanics from the Port Hueneme base will leave today for England, where they will support allied forces participating in Operation Desert Storm.
Since Iraq invaded Kuwait in August, about 375 people from the 1,400-member wing have been called to duty.
The Guard members--including doctors, pilots, medics and mechanics--airlift injured soldiers to hospitals and move cargo.
Officials say they expect more Guard members to be called up as the war continues.
