McBirney Pleads Guilty: Former Dallas thrift president Edwin T. McBirney III pleaded guilty to fraud, misapplication of funds and other felonies. McBirney, who led Sunbelt Savings Assn. from 1984 to mid-1986, entered the plea after agreeing to testify against other savings and loan figures. Prosecutors agreed to limit McBirney’s penalty to a maximum prison sentence of 15 years, a $7.5-million restitution payment and an $8.5-million settlement of civil claims by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
