Court Dismisses Helmsley Counts: A New York state court threw out eight tax evasion charges lodged against hotel queen Leona Helmsley because she was convicted of similar federal charges in 1989. The New York State Appellate Court ruled that there was double jeopardy because both the state and federal cases stemmed from the same transactions. She and her husband had both been charged with evading $1.2 million in taxes.
