Councilman Returns to His Duties

El Segundo City Councilman Jim Clutter has returned to the council after an eight-month leave of absence during which he underwent chemotherapy for cancer of the lymph nodes. “I’m just about up to speed,” said the 60-year-old councilman, who resumed his city duties in January. “I’m still taking some treatments but I’m really feeling good.”

Clutter said weekly chemotherapy treatments appeared to eliminate the cancer. But some traces were found in a later checkup, and he is now receiving monthly treatments. “I hope this will do it,” he said.

Clutter, who was elected to the council in 1988, said he “got a big thrill” going back to City Hall. “You don’t appreciate what you have until you’re just about to lose it,” he said.
