Vietnam
The Times deserves congratulations for the article by Richard Reeves (“Killing the Vietnamese Softly With a 74-Year-Old Law,” Opinion, Jan. 27), which reveals the Bush Administration’s deep-seated hate for the Vietnamese who did nothing to deserve a 10-year war.
To continue this spiteful practice is disgraceful when one considers the continuous burdens placed on these abused people who suffered more than 300,000 civilian dead and a million wounded. In addition, fertile land was devastated, numerous villages burned to the ground (a violation of war rules), the implantation of Agent Orange which continues to cause deformed babies, in addition 1 million orphans created by Americans, not to mention the sadistic treatment of war prisoners and wounded.
I don’t believe the average American is aware of the kind of war we practiced. Vietnam is due reparations, not further punishment.
