VENTURA : Parents Object to School Board Plan

Share

In front of a standing-room-only crowd, half a dozen parents told the Ventura Unified School District board on Tuesday that they oppose a controversial plan to redraw school boundaries in the 15,000-student district.

Parents came to protest the plan, many carrying placards identifying their children’s schools. Under the plan, which is aimed at allowing children to attend neighborhood schools, more than 3,400 students would be transferred to different schools.

Al VanWagner charged that the board plan is unfair to parents who bought homes close to certain schools so their children could attend them and called the plan racist because “it disturbs natural boundaries and concentrates minorities” at certain schools.
