Austria won the Nordic combined team event today for its first gold medal at the World Nordic Ski Championships.

France was second and Japan, which had not won a Nordic medal in 21 years, finished third.

Austria had a virtually unbeatable lead going into the final cross-country relay.

The Austrian threesome of Gunter Csar, Klaus Ofner and Klaus Sulzenbacher finished 1 minute, 16.4 seconds ahead of France in the 3 x 10-kilometer freestyle relay on the Lago di Tesero high-altitude course.
