Share

Doug Yates of Chapman College hit three bases-empty home runs, but UC Irvine rallied for a run in the 10th inning to defeat the Panthers, 5-4, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Hart Park in Orange.

Yates, a first baseman from Cypress College and El Dorado High School, hit homers in the fifth, seventh and ninth innings. He also had a single and was four for four with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Yates, who hit 13 home runs last season at Chapman, has four this season.

Yates’ homer in the ninth came with one out and forced an extra inning.

Irvine loaded the bases in the 10th on a error, a hit batter and a single. Matt Filson drove a ball to deep right that was dropped by Chapman’s James Merriweather, allowing Pete Golaszewski to score the winning run. Chapman’s scorer ruled it an error and Irvine’s a hit, but the home scorer is considered official.
