Alaska Airlines has been named 1990 Airline of the Year by Air Transport World, the highly regarded airline industry trade publication.

The award is based on “consistent outstanding performance over time,” and focuses primarily on customer service, market development and financial management, the magazine said.

Raymond J. Vecci, Alaska’s president and chief executive officer, accepted the award today in New York for “each of the more than 6,000 Alaska employees who earned it.”

Alaska is the smallest recipient in the 17 years the magazine has given the award. Previous winners include Singapore Airlines, Swissair and Lufthansa.

Seattle-based Alaska Airlines serves 35 cities in Alaska, Mexico and five Western states and launches service to the Soviet Far East on June 17.
