From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Lawyers for Jim Bakker filed a motion urging that the PTL founder be freed from prison until he receives a new sentence in place of the 45-year term thrown out by a federal appeals court. The request was made a day after the sentence was overturned, although the court upheld Bakker’s 1989 conviction in Charlotte, N.C., for conspiring to defraud followers who bought partnerships in PTL’s Heritage USA in nearby Ft. Mill, S.C. Also, U.S. District Judge Graham Mullen was selected to resentence Bakker, who has served 16 months of his sentence at a federal facility in Rochester, Minn.
